Audit Reveals California Lottery Failed to Give Schools $69M

Record Mega Millions Jackpot Poised To Offer 3rd Largest Lottery Win In History

The California Lottery has shortchanged the state's public schools by millions of dollars, an audit has revealed.

The audit, which was commissioned by the state and released on Tuesday, has found the lottery failed to hand over more than $69 million over the last four years. "The Lottery did not adhere to a requirement to increase its funding for education proportionate to its increases in net revenue," the paperwork reads. "As a result, the Lottery failed to provide required funding of $36 million to education in fiscal year 2017–18."

The audit goes on to call for the California Lottery, which was created in 1984 specifically to help fund state schools, to hand over the money to the education system. Lottery officials have not yet commented on the audit.
