I can't believe I forgot to share this last week! Super Bowl LIII featured a ton of commercials; but, perhaps none was so widely discussed as Bud Light's crossover ad with HBO's Game of Thrones.
Budweiser has been living in their medieval fantasy world for just over a year now since forcing their "Dilly Dilly" catchphrase on an unsuspecting public. Now, it's come full circle with characters from HBO's hit series, Game Of Thrones. Wall Street Journal describes the commercial as the "biggest and boldest marketing tie-ins ... ever orchestrated." I think part of the reason this particular commercial received so much attention after the Big Game was because it was so unexpected. We had already seen far too many of the Super Bowl commercials in advance on social media, so there weren't many surprises during TV Time Outs this year. Social Media has killed much of the anticipation fans used to enjoy during Super Bowl commercial breaks. Bud Light and HBO kept this a well guarded secret right up to game time.
As it happens, the actor who has played The Bud Knight for Bud Light is someone I knew from high school on the Mississippi Gulf Coast - actor and musician Johnny Sneed . We talked with Johnny right after the Super Bowl and go the behind-the-scenes scoop on how this crossover commercial came together and whether or not it really is the end for The Bud Knight.
