President Trump has threatened to ban TikTok from use in the United States. The reasons the administration is giving is national security which is the same reason many onerous laws have passed in recent years including the Patriot Act. Trump and believes the Chinese are stealing and using the information gathered by TikTok despite the fact that TikTok has declared all of the information gathered is kept on US only servers. Microsoft has been in talks with the owners of TikTok to buy the company but that might not happen if Trump place Bytedance on the so-called foreign entities list, making it nearly impossible for an American company to buy TikTok.
The only countries so far in which internet use is banned or restricted include North Korea, Vietnam, Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, and Cuba. Is this a list the United States should join, and are we on a slippery slope to banning any app the administration declares a national security problem?
