Portion Of I-475 To Be Named After Local WWII Soldier

StateRep. Michael Sheehy (D-Oregon)today announced the passage of House Bill (HB) 276, which includes a provision sponsored by Sheehy to rename a portion of I-475 after Sgt. Alexander Drabik, a Holland, Ohio native and the first Allied soldier to cross the Rhine River into Nazi-controlled Germany, paving the way to the war’s end.

“This historic commemoration will reaffirm Ohio as the home of American heroes. I’m thrilled to be able to share Sgt. Drabik’s story with the rest of the state, and with every traveler passing through Holland,”Rep. Sheehy said.

Drabik was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and a purple heart for heroism at the Battle of the Bulge, and was further celebrated for his bravery at the Remagen Bridge over the Rhine.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, would later make the claim that the capture of the bridge shortened the war by six months, and may well have saved 50,000 American lives.

Here's a quick WWII made video of the Bridge at Remagen.

On a side note the Battle Of The Bulge battlefield is one of the sites I will be visiting when I take a tour of listeners to WWII sites this August with Conservative Tours. Click on this link for details on this once in a lifetime trip D-DAY BEACHES/PARIS/BATTLE OF THE BULGE TOUR
