Longtime WSPD Sportscaster Jerry Keil Passes Away

Jerry Keil, long time 1370 WSPD sportscaster, died Feb. 13 at his home in Florida. Born Nov. 13, 1936, in Toledo to Leona and Clarence Keil, he was a 1954 graduate of DeVilbiss High School. Keil played both basketball and baseball in high school and later attended Bowling Green State Univiersity where the Jerry and Sharon Keil Scholarship has been established for students pursuing careers in sports journalism.

Keil began his Toledo radio career in 1961 at 1370 WSPD covering sports for both morning and evening shows on the station. In 1965 Keil became the voice of UT Rocket sports when the radio station obtained exclusive broadcast rights. He remained in that position until the end of the '93-'94 basketball season. Keil tried his hand at television for short period of time at Channel 13 but found the added work load overwhelming and chose to stick with his radio duties.

He is survived by his wife, nee Sharon Klump, ; daughters, Kris Ballish, Cheryl Couturier, and Amy Keil Carroll; brothers, James and Jack Keil; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will begin at 1 p.m. March 21 at Toledo Memorial Park's Chapel of Memories, Sylvania. A celebration of life will follow from 2-4 p.m. March 21 at Highland Meadows Golf Club.

If you wish to honor the family's wishes donations can be made to the Jerry and Sharon Keil Scholarship in care of the BGSU Foundation.
