Last night in Baghdad a US led airstrike killed Iran's top general Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force unit. Also killed in the directed attack was the deputy head of Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an Iran-backed paramilitary force. The attack which was authorized by President Trump comes as a response to an attack on the US Embassy led by PMF supporters and leaders. Iran's Supreme Leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed to avenge Soleimani whom he referred to as a martyr.
There are reports that some citizens in Iraq reacted with joy at the news of the death of Soleimani but video this morning shows a crowd of people in his hometown marching in the streets to honor him. Here in the States politicians on both sides of the aisle are taking sides with many on the left saying the President's actions will increase tensions in the Mid-East and lead to possible war. On the Republican side most are standing behind Trump and calling the strike a strong message to those that would attack American forces, citizens, and interests in the region.
