Over the weekend a war of words between President Trump and congressman Elijah Cummings exploded over comments Trump had made on Twitter. The President said the Cummings' represented district was "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.". To be fair some parts of the district have had problems with rats, crime, and abandoned homes but other sections are doing well. The President seemed to be taking his cues from a FOX News report on the city that had aired earlier in the weekend.
The Baltimore Sun printed an editorial calling Trump out for racist language and some have said it was better to have the rats than to be a rat.
In 2015 leading up to the 2016 election one candidate referred to Baltimore as like walking through a "third world country" after taking a walking tour of some neighborhoods. There was no outcry at the time about the comment being racist.
