More than one thousand passengers were trapped on the Norwegian cruise ship Viking Sky when the ship lost power and became stranded just off the Western coast of Norway this past weekend. The ship signaled a Mayday while it was being battered by both high winds and waves and in danger of hitting shore. Because of the high seas life boats were useless and passengers had to be airlifted off the ship by a group of five helicopters. Hundreds were evacuated in that manner while hundreds others waited until authorities felt it safe enough for the ship to make port with the aid of tugboats.
The ship made port late Sunday and some passengers are already flying home. Plans for the ship to leave on its next cruise later this week have been cancelled already.
