City planners need to see this video about walking paths

This video struck a nerve with me. I'm not a big fan of city designed walk and biking paths as you know so the explanation of "desire paths" really caught my eye. Desire paths or freedom trails as they are known in some countries are those little shortcuts you see everywhere on college campus' and business parks. Take a walk anywhere really and you see worn down paths that shave off maybe a foot or two of the planned sidewalk or paved path.

Why do we do that? Is it to save a few steps or to show that we have at least a little control over our own path in life? Watch this video and let me know what you think.
