Starting this week, cars are temporarily banned on Griffith Park Drive from the Travel Town Museum to Mt. Hollywood Drive – a popular shortcut drivers take to avoid freeway traffic. The road is now only open for people to walk, bike or ride horses.

Officials say it's the first step in a project aimed at making the park safer for people walking, biking and riding horses.

The change comes a couple months after Andrew Jelmert was hit and killed by a driver while biking on Crystal Springs Drive. After his death, safety advocates called on the city to make the park safer and reduce car traffic.

City Councilmember Nithya Raman said her office was already looking into ways to improve safety in the park, but Jelmert’s “sudden and incredibly tragic death… really made this an intervention with real urgency behind it.”
