When public schools became the norm in the 1840's it was meant as a way to create better citizens and a common core of disciplines and thought. Over the years much has been made of how far the education system has wandered from what Horace Mann originally had in mind. Until today we are distrustful of teachers, concerned over content of curriculum, and overpaying for a system which in many cases does not work for everyone.
