massive pile up on I-64

A massive "chain-reaction" pileup on I-64 in Virginia early Sunday morning left dozens of people with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening, authorities said.

According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office in Virginia, at least 63 cars were involved in the pileup in the westbound lanes of I-64 near Williamsburg, Sunday morning. At the time of the crash, weather conditions in the area include heavy fog, with ice present on the Queens Creek Bridge. In photos of the accident scene provided by the Sheriff's office, rescue personnel can be seen standing on tops of the cars, many of which sustained damage as a result of the chain-reaction crash.

At least 35 people have been transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening, authorities said. There have been no fatalities reported.

Eastbound lanes on I-64 were briefly shut down thanks to curious commutters who were looking at the crashed cars. Detours were set up with the help of the York County Sheriff's office and Virginia's Department of Transportation. Eastbound lanes were reopened at around 11 a.m. local time, VDOT said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
