(Luckey, OH) The cleanup at a former Wood County weapons making site is progressing.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing the public periodic updates on its contractor clean-up efforts at a former Brush Beryllium site near Luckey.
Soil is being removed from a former lagoon and being sorted on the site, as the search for radioactive contamination begins. So far, crews have identified beryllium, urnaium, lead, radium, and thorium in the soil.
Any soil that exceeds targeted contamination is being set aside and placed in special containers for transport off-site to a hazardous materials landfill in Michigan. But so far, nothing has left Luckey. Meantime, crews are trying to control any soil dust from escaping the cleanup site.
