Bishop Offers Vacant Church As Gift To City

(Toledo, OH)   The fate of Toledo's St. Anthony Church could be sealed as early as this afternoon.

Toledo and Lucas County Land Bank officials have a 5 p.m. deadline to decide whether to accept the church property at no cost from the Diocese of Toledo.

Bishop Daniel Thomas made the offer Wednesday after his original proposal to have the city pay for breaking a demolition contract was rejected.  Part of the bishop's offer requires Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur to cover the $70,000 cost to remove construction equipment from the site, as she had already offered to do in an earlier meeting.

Toledo city officials want to save the nearly 130-year-old building from demolition as part of a neighborhood redevelopment plan.
