Tobacco Shop to Face Regulatory Scrutiny

(Toledo, OH) The Toledo Plan Commission could decide the fate of a new tobacco shop today.

A tobacco store would be the anchor of a six-tenant commercial building at the corner of Monroe and Flanders in a busy retail section that borders Sylvania Township.

But municipal code requires a special-use permit be approved for any new tobacco-related business in Toledo. So the one-and-a-half acre strip mall has some hoops to jump through before getting any regulatory approval.

Then the special-use permit will be under scrutiny for its operating hours and could get yanked or lapse after a year if there are some secondary effects on a nearby neighborhood from the tobacco store's operation.
