Toledo Police Department Disbands Motorcycle Unit

(Toledo, OH) You won't see Toledo police officers on motorcycles anymore.

There won't be anymore TPD motorcycles in parades-- or on patrol-- anymore. After nearly six years on the road, Police Chief George Kral says the costs to replace ten motorcycles and train new officers were too high to keep the unit running.

That cost was estimated at about $200,000, because only half the motorcycle cops remain due to personnel changes. Motorcycle officers will be reassigned to field operations and traffic enforcement.

The unit had limited capability due to Toledo's climate and safety factors, such as high-speed chases and responding to code 3 calls.
