Malfunction Sets Off Warning Sirens Near North Carolina Nuclear Power Plant

North Carolina residents got a scare Friday afternoon when warning sirens from a nearby nuclear power plant started blaring. According to WNCN, the sirens, which are placed in a ten mile radius around the plant, were going on and off for three to four minutes. Officials said a malfunction caused the sirens to go off, and that "there is no impact to the public and no need for public actions."

Many residents were not happy with how Duke Energy to handled the malfunction. According to WRAL, residents complained that the energy company provided very little information. It took them over 30 minutes before tweeting about the issue. Duke Energy said that in the event of a real emergency, police and local emergency officials would provide residents with information.

Officials at the power plant said they are planning tests on the sirens on Saturday so they can determine what caused the malfunction, and ensure the system is working properly.
