Couple Lives On $1,600 A Year In Tiny Fort & You Won't Believe Inside

A free-spirited and frugal couple have spent two years living off-grid in a hilltop coastal fort, surviving on just £1,250 ($1,637) a year.

Trained teacher Sarah Simpson, 27, and estate manager Nigel Mepham, 44, decided to leave conventional life behind in order to live a more simple and sustainable existence.

They live rent-free in their 18th-century Cornish coastal fort, in exchange for tending the land. Secondhand solar panels provide electricity, and the two grow their own fruits and vegetables. Nothing goes to waste in their household, as everything is recycled or repurposed. They even use the pelts from rabbits their terriers bring home for blankets.

The couple will soon finish their stint at the fort, and are currently building a new floating home for themselves, their dogs, and chickens.

They have been working on the new water home for five months, though there have been delays because of weather. Their new residence consists of huts mounted on a barge, and it will even include hatches for fishing, as well as a chicken coop.

There are certainly days when many (including myself!) dream of leaving conventional life behind to exist somewhere off-grid. Sadly, it will probably remain just a dream for most of us. I hope Sarah and Nigel will continue to share their adventures so we can experience a little bit of their unconventional life, too.
