Ohio Secretary of State Rejects Nominee To Board of Elections

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Secretary of State Jon Husted has told the Lucas County Republican Party to make another choice to fill the vacant seat on the Lucas County Board of Elections.

The Lucas County Republican Party Executive Committee had tapped Ernest McCarthy to fill the vacant seat on the board, but Secretary Husted has rejected his nomination. In a letter to party chairman Jon Stainbrook, Husted cited Mr. McCarthy's ties to "individuals who were at the epicenter of the board's past culture of dysfunction."

Secretary Husted cannot directly appoint members to county boards of elections, but has the power to reject nominees that he receives from local political parties.

In his Tuesday morning letter, Husted recommended two people for the position: attorney Bill Jennings and former state representative David Karmol. The Lucas County Republican Party Executive Committee will now have to make another recommendation before the seat can be filled.
