One of the most intense hockey rivalries of the 1990's was the Red Wings vs. the Colorado Avalanche. The bad feelings started the year before in the 1996 Western Conference Finals. In Game 6, the Avs' Claude Lemieux sent the Wings' Kris Draper head-first into the boards. Draper was sent to the hospital with broken jaw, cheek and orbital bones. Lemieux's hit defined this rivalry for years.
Fast forward to March 26, 1997. The Avalanche were visiting the Joe for the final time that year. Three previous games between the two had been played without incident. The fourth game would be different. The fact that the Red Wings won 6-5 in overtime would be forgotten. What would long be remembered was this massive brawl that featured an intense goalie fight and Claude Lemieux getting the receipt he was owed.
