Governor Mike DeWine made it official today at his daily Coronavirus task force presser, Ohio school children will not be back in the classroom this school year. Over 1.7 million children will be affected by the decision. DeWine offered this explanation “We have to think about the risk to teachers, students, and our communities,” “Teachers have done an amazing job..... everybody’ stepped up ... to bring he best education they can to our kids under unusual and difficult circumstances.”
The decision was supported by the Ohio Education Association, while the Ohio Federation of Teachers had already opposed the reopening of schools previously. No decision has been made on school opening in the fall yet. Districts across the state will now decide how best to handle online learning and whether or not to go to a pass/fail system or continue with grading for classes.
Ohio reported 1,317 more virus cases, mostly state prison inmates, and 38 additional deaths on Monday.
The new numbers brought the state’s total of confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases to 12,919 and raised confirmed and probable deaths to 509.
