Budget Battle Looming Between Council, Mayor

(Toledo, OH) Toledo city council has a key vote tonight under threat of a mayor's veto.

$20,000 is small potatoes in a multi-million dollar budget, but Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz is taking a stand on principle.

A city council member wants to fund an employee engagement survey from the general fund instead of taking the money from the newly-formed Toledo Human Rights Commission. But the mayor issued a warning memo that tapping Toledo's rainy day fund sets a bad precedent when the city budget is facing a $10 million deficit next year and $15 million in 2020.

Another city council proposal would take another 75-grand from the general fund for nonprofits Grace Community Center and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In the memo, the mayor says he won't question the causes, but the sources of funds would lead to a veto as it stands now.
