(Toledo, OH) There are claims of discrimination brewing at the Toledo Fire Department.
Advocates for a former Toledo Fire and Rescue Department recruit say he was fired from the department shortly after walking at the graduation from the fire academy for racial reasons. Major Smith the Third plans to file complaints with the U.S. Justice Department, Ohio Civil Rights Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission unless his backers get a meeting with the mayor.
The activists supporting Smith say he failed a critical test because he was taught an incorrect way to ventilate a roof, and was fired despite verbal assurances from the mayor that he'd keep the job.
The allegations come as Toledo's first-ever Latino fire chief is about to retire.
