Boomfest, Block Party, Lighthouse Festival on Tap

(Toledo, OH) There's one more chance to experience holiday fireworks this weekend.

Boomfest in Oregon at Oak Shade Grove Saturday features the Cruisin' the Grove classic car show starting a noon. But there's also a regional powerlifting competition in a number of different divisions for people 13 years and older. Local band Arctic Clam takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. as the opening act for founding member and former lead singer of Foreigner, Lou Gramm.

The fireworks follow the headline concert. But once the bright lights and booms are done, Arctic Clam will retake the stage with the Amelia Airharts and both bands will play until midnight. Food and beer trucks also will be on site.

One of Toledo's biggest block parties returns tomorrow evening.

The Toledo Museum of Art will shut down Monroe Street Saturday night for its fifth annual block party, a chance to encourage family-friendly fun outside and people to check out the museum indoors. A drumline, a D-J, Indian dances, and a circus are part of the entertainment, while a roving magician, juggle, and the Toledo School for the Arts pageant puppets and bubble sharks will keep the kids attention.

Glassblowing demonstrations will be featured at the Glass Pavilion, while flame-working demos can be seen on the Peristyle Terrace. A dozen food trucks and a beer tent also will be available. The yearly event draws thousands of party-goers to enjoy the Museum’s 40-acre campus. The block runs 6 to 10 p.m.

Perfect weather will greet the annual Toledo Lighthouse Festival this weekend.

The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse is the spot where Lake Erie and Maumee Bay meet, so the annual festival raises funds to preserve the 100-plus year old landmark. Lake Erie troubadours, steel drums and Jimmy Buffet- style music will entertain the crowds throughout the day along with a Saturday evening concert. About 75 craft and art vendors also will dot the landscape both Saturday and Sunday at Maumee Bay State Park.

Paddle-palooza on Sunday allows paddleboarding and kayaking, along with boat rides around the lighthouse. Festival organizers estimated it will eventually take one-and-a-half million dollars to preserve the lighthouse in its original state.

Music under the Stars returns this weekend at the Toledo Zoo. The Toledo Symphony Concert Band will take the stage at the zoo amphitheatre for weekly Sunday evening concerts. Stars Stripes and Sousa is the theme of this week’s outdoor concert, starting at 7:30 p.m.
