(Columbus, OH) Backers say new puppy mill regulations headed to the governor's desk could set a new national standard.
Governor John Kasich is being asked to sign compromise legislation that cleared the General Assembly that clears up a controversy that would now require pet stores to get a signed document from suppliers that the canines meet state standards of care for such things as feeding, housing, veterinary care and exercise.
The General Assembly last year passed a law that struck down a ban on pet stores reselling animals from puppy mills that were passed in Toledo and a Columbus suburb.
But the Humane Society and dog retailer Petland got behind the compromise legislation, making Ohio the first state in the country to require verification of where canines come from before they're sold to families.
