(Luckey, OH) The first contaminated soil will be carted off-site from a former World War Two weapons site in Wood County.
A contractor will begin hauling the containers of contaminated soil from the Luckey site to a hazardous materials landfill in Michigan this week. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the soil has been sifted and sorted, and the soil set aside for disposal is being loaded into flexible bulk packages inside hard-sided roll-off containers.
Those sealed packages are then covered in a tarp before leaving the site, to keep dust from contaminated soil from escaping. Up to 124,000 tons of low-level radioactive soil and other materials will be taken away, with nearly a dozen big rigs per day carrying about 15 tons of soil each north on Toledo-area freeways.
Remediation of the long-shuttered beryllium plant could take up to a decade.
