Annual Fire Memorial Service to Be Held in Toledo

(Toledo, OH) The Toledo fire department will honor those killed in the line of duty today during its annual fire memorial service.

The noontime memorial service in downtown Toledo coincides with the 57th anniversary of the Anthony Wayne Trail fire, when a gasoline tanker truck exploded near Collingwood Boulevard, sending a fireball and black smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles. Four Toledo firefighters died that day and eleven others were injured in the blasts that followed and melted the sides of nearby homes.

The memorial service will be held at Chub DeWolfe Park on Huron Street near the Toledo fire department's administrative offices. Lucas County Common Pleas Court Judge Stacy Cook will be the guest speaker.

Toledo firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty and retirees who passed in 2017 will be remembered. Fire Captains George Fraser and Ben Miner will be added to the monument during the service.
