Sturgeon To Be Restored in Lake Erie

(Toledo, OH) A nearly extinct fish species will be restored in Lake Erie this summer.

The Toledo Zoo will raise about 1,500 young lake sturgeon this summer in tanks the zoo recently received specifically for the fish. Eggs to raise sturgeon hatchlings are expected to arrive in June, then the fish will be released into the Maumee River sometime in August or September.

The expectation is the fish will find their way to Lake Erie, where sturgeon can live a century or more. The once-abundant fish species nearly disappeared over 100 years ago because of overfishing.

A $90,000 dollar grant is funding the restoration project.
