Library Branches Celebrate Centennials This Week

(Toledo, OH) Three library branches will celebrate their centennials this week.

The Mott Branch Library will kick off the series of 100th anniversary celebrations. The library branch on Dorr Street originally opened in 1918 using fund from famous library philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.

But today's centennial celebration also will serve as the official groundbreaking for construction of a new Mott branch library across the street next to Martin Luther King, Junior, elementary school.

Tomorrow, the Maumee Branch Library will take its turn in the centennial spotlight with a 10 a.m. celebration-- as the former site of a seminary, a courthouse, a glass factory, and an important battle in the War of 1812.

The South branch got new digs along Broadway with a bilingual book collection a few years ago-- its old site now a health clinic for the Old South End's most needy patients. A Thursday ceremony will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
