OVI-Related Crashes Down in Ohio Last Year

(Columbus, OH) The state highway patrol says OVI-related fatal crashes are down last year.

Ohio's troopers put a special emphasis in 2017 on taking drunk and drugged drivers off state highways last year-- and it appears to be paying off. OVI-related crashes still accounted for a little over one-third of all fatal wrecks last year, but that's a slight decrease from 2016.

There were nearly 14,400 OVI crashes in Ohio last year, killing nearly 400 people and injuring 8,800 others. But troopers took more than 27,000 impaired drivers off  Ohio roadways last year.

The profile of the mostly likely drunk or drugged driver is a male between the ages of 21 and 39.
