I-75 Overpass Incidents Prompt Safety Reponses

(Toledo, OH) ODOT and Toledo police  are responding with action to a recent string of dangerous incidents on an I-75 bridge project.

Construction on the Indiana Ave./I-75 overpass still has a year of construction to go, but so far two deaths and an injury have been linked to the construction zone.

A woman was injured after being hit by rocks from  the Washington Street exit in September. A man was killed in November when he drove the wrong way down a one-way street into the construction zone. Most recently, 22-year old Marquise Byrd died last month while riding in a car when a sandbag was tossed onto I-75 from the overpass.

Toledo police have stationed its portable Skycop crime camera at the edge of the project and ODOT is installing a special fence it hopes will deter anyone from throwing anything from the bridge.

Both agencies hope the improvements will keep anyone else from getting hurt.
