Mayor Asks For Impairment Declaration For Lake Erie

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Mayor of Toledo is reversing her previous stance and asking for Lake Erie to be declared impaired.

WTOL 11 reports Mayor Paula Hicks Hudson says she's sending letters to Governor Kasich and President Trump, asking for the impaired status. If western Lake Erie were to be designated as impaired, the EPA would be required to develop a plan to address pollution levels in the water and set up a testing program to ensure clean up standards are being met.

The Lucas County Commissioners and the Mayor's opponent in November's mayoral election Wade Kapszukiewicz have already called for the western basin of Lake Erie to be designated impaired.
