Feds Reopen Infant Death Probe

(Defiance, OH) The FBI hopes to find new answers in the cold-case death of a baby girl two decades ago.

Federal agents hope to use DNA evidence to link the infant girl to whomever abandoned her in a field behind Riverview Memory Gardens in Defiance.

A cemetery grounds crew discovered the infant in a dry cleaning bag, believed to be several months old. Few details are known, except a medical clamp was on the umbilical cord during the birth. An autopsy turned up no obvious cause of death and a Defiance County sheriff's investigation came up empty.

The infant's body was exhumed to obtain DNA-- unavailable at the time of her 1994 death. The FBI and local police are hoping tips also will help I.D. the baby.
