Special Olympics Torch Run Begins Today

(Toledo, OH) The annual law enforcement torch run for Special Olympics starts this morning in Northwest Ohio.

The torch run will start at the Sylvania Police Department at lunchtime, stopping to pick up Sylvania Township cops on the way into the Glass City.

Toledo police officers join the run at the Northwest District station at 3 p.m., where the Flame of Hope will be carried to the University of Toledo. At dinnertime, the second leg of the torch run kicks off from the downtown Toledo police station, and heads to Fifth Third Field where the flame will be lit and a Special Olympics athlete will throw out the first pitch at tonight's Mud Hens game.

Over the next week, cops will run, walk, or bicycle the Flame of Hope more than 1,000 miles and through more than 150 Ohio communities at times joined by Special Olympians on the way to the state games.
