Mayor Candidate Proposes Hiring More Cops

(Toledo, OH) Public safety becomes an issue in the Toledo mayor's race.

Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapsukiewicz is proposing to hire 40 police officers per year if he's elected Toledo's next mayor.

The Democratic candidate projects a net gain of 60 street cops during a four-year mayor's term, given the expected pace of police retirements. There are just over 600 officers on Toledo's police force, which city officials say has long been short-staffed due to budget problems.

Kapsukiewicz is taking on endorsed incumbent Paula Hicks-Hudson on the Democratic side, while city councilman Tom Waniewski is running as a Republican.
