School Board Nukes Levy over Davis-Besse Future

(Oak Harbor, OH) Uncertainty over the future of the Davis-Besse power plant is prompting one board of education to nuke a levy.

Benton-Carroll-Salem schools had been seeking a 30-year bond issue to pay for a new K through 7 elementary school. The school board is citing the “great uncertainty” surrounding Davis-Besse, such as its possible devaluation or sale-- which would have a drastic effect on taxes charged to farmers and residents in the rural school district.

First Energy is trying to decide what to do with its nuclear power plants-- and has asked state lawmakers to approve a clean-air subsidy on customer's electric bills. But the northern Ohio utility also is mulling whether to sell its aging coal and nuclear plants.
