Sandusky Now Owns Old American Crayon Site

(Sandusky, OH) Sandusky city commissioners are mad as hell, but they wrote the check anyway.

City officials purchased the former American Crayon factory for 150-thousand dollars Monday, blaming an absentee owner for causing an eyesore so close to Sandusky High School. The land purchase will expedite efforts to clean up the former industrial site.

The Texas owner agreed to demolish the factory and clean up the site last year, but city commissioners now say he took everything of value and left them to clean up the rest, including a $19,000 delinquent property tax lien.

American Crayon started in the late 1800's making chalk and then switched to school supplies before closing for good in 2002.
